How we do it…

We use years of professional expertise and state-of-the-art, fully color-calibrated scanners, cameras, monitors and printers to produce digital files and color-accurate reproductions of the highest quality.

Together we’ll first select the appropriate approach to achieve the quality desired but at the lowest cost for you the client.

Learn about these common steps:

Scanning to copy photos, documents, newspapers, negatives, positive film, glass slides, tintypes, calotypes, and other items such as lockets are the most commonly requested. A digital file is produced for archiving and museum-quality prints are made available in the sizes the client chooses.

Recovering a photograph that is stuck to the glass in a frame and especially one where the glass is broken in pieces requires special techniques. We’ve recovered several that have been damaged in this way. So far all attempts have been successful; we love the challenge of finding a way to recover important  images.

Whatever you do, do not attempt to remove the photograph stuck to the glass, The emulsion is usually tightly adhered to the glass and although some of the backing paper can be removed, the emulsion containing the image cannot be removed unless it was free initially.

Even severely-damaged photographs can be scanned or imaged with a camera. We are committed to never disturb the original photograph or document but to instead make a digital master that can be edited and restored as necessary.

Photographs which are distressed or mechancally damaged can usually be scanned and restored.

For three-dimensional images, such as vintage domed-oval photographs and some art with heavy texture or mixed media art, a digital file is produced using a professional digital camera with subsequent processing to correct for color and lighting.

Vintage domed-oval photographs tend to be very fragile. If the glass has not broken, it is best to remove the colorized photo in our studio to avoid any transportation damage. We will protect your heirloom very carefully. We can order replacement glass for most sizes but many choose to produce a flat print which can be framed traditionally.

Alternatively, the oval image can be rendered as a flat large-format print that can be finished as the client desires.

Slide film, both positive and negative, in cardboard or metal mounts and glass plates are captured at high resolution to produce high-quality prints of any size up to large-format

All slides are cleaned of dust and lint prior to scanning. Luminosity range, gamma, color balance, saturation, and sharpness are optimized for each individual slide prior to scanning. After scanning, each image is spotted and enhanced in a wide-range color gamut before saving to the appropriate file format.

Basic costs for digital capture of images range from $5 each for slides to be used for a video DVD to $18 for a high resolution file which has been spotted and enhanced. Restoration, if needed, is not included. Receive a project discount for multiple images based upon the total project.

DVD production of a video slide show begins at $40 with additional charges for title and text slides, special effects, background music and voice overlays. Please call 208.524.0926 for an appointment to review the project and receive a special project estimate.
